Dean Lofgren's Website

Dean Lofgren has served the students of El Camino College for the past 32 years. He began his Health Sciences and Kinesiology teaching responsibilities in September 1985 while working in the Laboratory of Exercise Sciences and assistant track & field/cross country coach. In 1989, he moved into his current head coaching and tenured faculty position. During his tenure, the Warriors have captured four CCCAA State Championships (2 XC and 2 T&F). Along with these titles, Lofgren’s teams have also acquired 14 additional state championship trophies (MXC-2nd (1), WXC-2nd (4), MXC 3rd (5), WTF-2nd (3), MTF-3rd (1)).  One of the most respected and admired coaches amongst his peers, Lofgren has garnered 6 CCCAA and 26 South Coast Conference Coach-of-the-Year Honors. In 2017, Lofgren was inducted into the 5CTCA Hall of Fame.  He is quick to credit the success of the El Camino Program to his loyal coaching staff which includes long time assistants Kevin Hughley, Michael Grissett, and Darryl Guerin, former assistant Sean Sheil (current Head Coach at Fullerton College) and current assistant John Hall.  Lofgren is most proud of the number of student-athletes that have transferred to 4-year universities across the United States. He is also extremely proud of the number of successful Warriors in the teaching/coaching profession. Through the years, Lofgren has been extremely active within the coaching association, serving in a number of capacities with the 5CTCA, SoCal Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association and the South Coast Conference.  Lofgren prepped at West Torrance High School and attended El Camino College where he participated in cross country and track & field under 5CTCA Hall of Fame Coach, Dave Shannon. He continued his education and running career at CSU Stanislaus where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Lofgren earned his masters degree at San Jose State University in Physiology of Exercise/Human Performance.  Prior to arriving to El Camino College in the fall of 1985, Lofgren served as Head Cross Country Coach (men and women) and Associate Head Track & Field Coach at CSU Stanislaus.  Lofgren resides in Torrance with his wife Donna, son Nick (currently a junior at UC Berkeley), and dog Benson.
