English 1A
|
Welcome to English 1A! During the next 16 weeks, we will be exploring some exciting ideas, as we read, discuss, analyze and write. We will be working with two intertwined themes: family relationships and the hero journey story. In addition, we will research and learn more about the racial tensions that linger in the United States and the history behind those tensions.
You will write:
- an in-class narrative essay based on our reading of "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost
- a fairy-tale analysis essay
- a character analysis based on The Secret Life of Bees
- a 6 to 8 page research paper on a topic connected to The Secret Life of Bees
- an analysis of a film or story using Joseph Campbells's Hero Journey motif
- an in-class poetry analysis essay based on a group of poems that we discuss in class
- 7 journals in which you respond to specific thought-provoking questions about the readings
- a 3-5 minute presentation to help your classmates understand one aspect of the novel Big Fish

Required Texts:
Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions by Daniel Wallace
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
Student Learning Outcome:
By the end of the course, you should be able to do this:
Given an out-of-class writing task in which students find multiple sources related to a particular topic, students write a research report that shows the ability to support a single thesis using analysis, to synthesize and integrate materials effectively from a variety of sources, and to cite sources in MLA format (including a works cited page). The report is organized, technically correct in paragraph composition, sentence structure, grammar, spelling and word use, and demonstrates a thoughtful treatment of the subject
