Catalog Description

This course focuses on the principles and methods of planning, implementing and evaluating music and movement experiences for young children. Activities such as group singing, rhythmic experiences and creative movement to foster the child's cognitive, psychosocial and physical development will be presented. The course is designed for teachers in training and teachers in service needing to develop and refine skills in planning and implementing curriculum.

Required Text

Experiences in Movement Birth to Age 8  by Rae Pica (Any edition is acceptable.)

Tardiness:

The main complaint of my students is other students who arrive late. Students coming in late are a distraction and a disruption to all of us. If you are late it will be recorded on your grade sheet with an “L.” Lates “L’S” will be equal to one (1) absence. If you are late you must come up after class to get your folder and record your attendance.

Absences  (Please read this very carefully)

This class emphasizes active participation in group activities and discussions. You are allowed a maximum of three (2) absences.  After that you will be dropped from the class. If it is past the drop deadline you will receive an “F”. There are no exceptions to this policy. Please keep a close eye on your attendance. If you MUST be absent it is your responsibility to obtain information, handouts and assignments from a fellow student. Find a “study buddy.”

College-Level Writing

Papers must be college-level and edited for spelling and grammar. If a paper has too many errors it will be returned to you so that you can edit and then resubmit it. If you are having trouble you can meet with a tutor at the Learning Resource Center in the library, or go to the El Camino Writing Center. Good writing skills are essential to your success in college.

Communication is Key

If you are struggling with or have a question about any of the concepts that I am presenting in class please do not hesitate to talk to me about it. We can talk on the phone, you can fax me, e-mail me, meet during my office hours, or you can make an appointment. If you are an ESL student, or if you have any areas that you need assistance please contact me so that we can develop some strategies to help you make this a valuable learning experience.

Class Folders

Please initial your attendance at the beginning of each class meeting. If you are late you may pick up your folder and sign in after class.  Please leave your folder in class at all times.
