Course Descriptions - Introductory Biology Classes

Biology 1A - Introductory Biology I

5 units:  3 hr. lecture, 6 hr. lab
Recommended preparation:  eligibility for
English 1A.  It is also recommended that
Chemistry 1A or Chemistry 21A be taken
concurrently in preparation for Biology 1B.
Credit, degree applicable
Transfers to CSU, UC (CAN BIOL 2;
Biology 1A, 1B = CAN BIOL SEQ A)

Course includes general principles of biology:  emphasis on cytology, physiology, and genetics of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells; the anatomy, morphology, physiology, life histories, ecology, and evolution of significant representation of Kingdoms Monera, Protista, Fungi, and Plantae; basic laboratory techniques and procedures, and the use of laboratory equipment.
Note:  Primarily for the student planning to transfer to the University of California in pre-mecidal or pre-dentistry programs or in the sciences.

Biology 1B - Introductory Biology II

5 units:  3 hr. lecture, 6 hr. lab
Prerequisite:  Biology 1A with a
minimum grade of C or equivalent;
Chemistry 21 A with a minimum grade
of C in prerequisite
Credit, degree applicable
Transfers to CSU, UC (Biology 1A,
1B - CAN BIOL SEQ A)

This course is a study of the general principles in the anatomy, morphology, physiology, life histories, ecology, and evolutionary aspects of significant representatives of the Kingdom Animalia.  Also included are the molecular aspects of biology.  In the laboratory the students become familiar with basic techniques and procedures related to the direction of selected animal specimens as well as microscopy for determining cell morphology and types of tissues.

Biology 1C - Fundamentals of Molecular Biology

3 units:  3 hr. lecture
Prerequisite:  Biology 1B with a minimum grade of C;
Chemistry 7A with a minimum grade of C or
concurrent enrollment
Credit, degree applicable
Transfers to CSU, UC

This course is an introduction to molecular biology including protein structure and functions; DNA and RNA structure and functions; protein synthesis; genome organization in viruses, prokaryotes, and eukaryotes; gene cloning; DNA technology and applications of genetic engineering.

Biology 10 - Fundamentals of Biology

4 units:  3 hr. lecture, 3 hr. lab
Recommended preparation:  English 2R
Credit, degree applicable
Transfers to CSU, UC (credit limitation)

This course is a survey of all living things:  prokaryotes, protists, fungi, plants, and animals.  Basic principles of structure, function, and relationships of living organisms are discussed with special reference to humans.
