ANTH 2: Cultural Anthropology Online
Fall 2008 (starts 8/25/08) THIS CLASS IS FULL and I'm no longer accepting any adds.
THIS CLASS IS ONLY RECOMMENDED FOR STUDENTS WHO: 1) have above-average reading comprehension and writing skills (more reading is required in an online class than a traditional class; you're responsible for finding all the information on your own rather than by attending class meetings and interacting with others). 2) are good at managing their time and sticking to deadlines (you need to be able to set your own schedule for reading, studying and completing assignments) 3) are self-motivated and effective independent learners (you're completely on your own and will not have face-to-face interaction with the instructor and your classmates; you need to consider whether this method of learning is the right option for you). 4) have regular access to the internet and Microsoft Word
(preferably at home and high-speed internet access)
If this doesn't describe you, I recommend you take a traditional, face-to-face class instead. Online classes are a great option for highly motivated students, but tend to have a very high drop rate (30-50% of the students usually wind up dropping because the class was not what they expected). ONLINE CLASSES ARE NOT EASIER, OR LESS WORK, THAN A TRADITIONAL CLASS. This is a common misconception. If anything, online classes are more work because students are completely responsible for their own learning. Since you're not attending lectures, there's more material for you to read on your own.
ONLINE CLASSES ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE. To determine whether this class is right for you, take the "Is an Online Class for Me?" Quiz and read the DE handbook (left). You need to be fully aware of what's involved in an online class before you enroll in one. Students who successfully complete online classes are self-motivated, organized, detail-oriented and have above-average reading comprehension skills and good writing skills. Students without these skills have a difficult time keeping up with the workload and often end up dropping the class or receiving a low grade.
