Course Description:
This course introduces students to the anthropological study of language and non-verbal human communication. Using cross-cultural perspective and comparison, students will examine the complex relationship between culture and the ways in which humans communicate. Topics include language acquisition, linguistic diversity, bilingualism, sociolinguistics, the structure of language, and linguistic change. Animal communication will also be explored, as well as human body language.
3 units; 3 hours lecture
