FAQ's

How do I get a library card?

The El Camino ID card you are issued also acts as your library card. You need to come to the Schauerman Library Circulation desk to get the card activated and into the library system before you can use it to check out materials. These cards are obtainable from the Student Development Office in the Student Activities Center.

Is the library card free?

Yes, the card is free. However, if you lose the card there is a replacement fee.

Does the library have study rooms?

Yes. At least 2 students must occupy the room. Reservations are recommended and may be made on the day of use at the Circulation desk.

Can I get text books in the library?

The Periodicals/Reserve desk keeps copies of some ECC text books. Please check with this desk about a particular title.

Will someone show me how to find the books and use the computer resources in the library?

Many Faculty bring their classes to the library for an orientation and bibliographic instruction - this allows students to have a brief tour and an overview of how to access the most commonly used databases and print tools. If you have not been on such an orientation,  or feel you still have questions, the Reference staff will be happy to show you around and answer your questions.

Can I check out periodicals?

No, paper copies of the periodicals are not available for checkout. You may use your library card at the Periodicals desk to have access to paper issues to photocopy.

Also, printing, downloading and e-mailing of full text articles from certain periodical and newspaper databases is available.

Can I get a card if I am not a student at El Camino ?

You can join the Friends of the Library for $25 per year and get a card by virtue of your membership.

Can I get a job working at the Library?

Yes, there are limited jobs available for student help.

Can I plug in my laptop in the library?

There are electrical outlets for laptops, and wireless Internet access from some areas within the library.

Do you have color copiers? Word processing? Scanners? Fax machines?

No fax machines. A color copier, word processing software and scanners are available in the Library Media Technology Center (LMTC) in the East Wing Library basement.
