Library Departments & Services

Acquisitions/ Collection Development

This Department coordinates the selection, acquisition, and maintenance of the Library's book collection.

For further information, please contact Alice Grigsby, Library Director, at (310) 660-3525.

Bibliographic Instruction

This area of the Library aims to increase student success by improving student information literacy and competency.  Instructors can request tours, general orientations, or a subject-specific instruction class by contacting the Bibliographic Instruction Librarian or Reference Desk to arrange a suitable time. The standard orientation is a 50- minute lecture and demonstration of traditional print as well as online and other information resources available from the Schauerman Library. We will schedule the visit, and discuss what your students will need from the library so as to successfully complete the assignment. Please contact us at least one week in advance. Other services include faculty brown-bag workshops, hands-on lab sessions for students, and "Lunch Hour Labs."

For further information, please contact Claudia Striepe, Bibliographic Instruction Librarian, at (310) 660-6006.

Cataloging/Systems Development

The Library's Cataloging/Systems Development Department has a dual purpose. Cataloging includes the assignment of appropriate call numbers, the physical preparation of materials including labels, and the entry of the information into the Library's online catalog. The Systems Development facet of the department provides assistance to staff in the utilization of all online or computerized equipment. It also provides leadership in the establishment of new computerized services for the public and staff.

For further information, please contact Jane Terry, Cataloger, at (310) 660-6434.

Public Access

Public Access incorporates the following areas.

Circulation

The Circulation Department is the area where patrons may register for library privileges. This is also where books may be checked in and out of the library. Currently registered students or currently employed faculty/staff may register as library users. Other members of the public may receive a library card by joining the Friends of the Library.

Periodicals/Reserve Collections

The Periodicals/Reserve Collections Department maintains a collection of newspapers, magazines, and journals, including hard-copy and microfilm subscriptions. Faculty Reserve materials and the Textbook Collection are also available. Most of these materials can be checked out for only 2 hours at a time and must remain in the Library; a library card is required. In addition, the Department offers a electronic reserve system known as ERes which provides students with Web-based access to selected course materials that instructors place on reserve.

For further information, please contact Ed Martinez, Public Access Librarian, at (310) 660-3876.

Reference

The Schauerman Library's Reference Department is located in the Library's East Wing on the Main level. Librarians at the Reference Desk assist instructors, students, and staff in finding information with resources such as the online library catalog, various information databases, and the Internet. Librarians also provide both one-on-one and class instruction on the effective use of these resources for research. Instructors may schedule class visits and request Interlibrary Loans at the Reference Desk.  The Department includes a Reference Collection and a limited number of computers for use in research.

For further information, please contact Vince Robles, Reference Librarian, at (310) 660-3874; or Moon Ichinaga, Reference Librarian, (310) 660-6482; or the librarian on duty at the Reference Desk, (310) 660-6483.
