Schauerman Library Web Guides - Disabilities
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, "The term 'disability' means a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of an individual" for an extended period of time, or permanently. Disabilities recognized under the Americans with Disabilities Act include learning disabilities such as dyslexia or dyscalculia, psychiatric disabilities such as depression or PTSD, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, chronic health impairments, a mobility impairment, a seriously injured hand, knee, head, etc., a severe visual impairment, a hearing impairment. However, there can be very different interpretations by the courts, for instance: the courts have ruled that a condition is not necessarily a disability. Thus, if you have a visual impairment, but contact lenses solve the problem, then you do not have a disability, however, it is not always that simple.
