How to Become a Tutor

The LRC Tutorial Program requirements

  1. You must have knowledge of the subject you will be tutoring. This can be demonstrated by verifying a minimum grade of "B" in a college class, in addition to a professor's recommendation.
  2. Contact Jan Ball (Or Lisa George), the LRC Tutoring Coordinator, and fill out an application. You can either contact Jan in person or by phone.
  3. Jan's Phone number is 1-310-660-3593 ext. 6012. Her office is located in the Learning Resources Center (upper West Wing of the Schauerman Library). Or email her at jball@elcamino.edu. Lisa George at 1-310-660-3593 ext. 6722.
  4. Register for Tutor Training 200
  5. Watch training videos and participate in other training activities.


TUTOR TRAINING 200

Theory and Practice of Tutoring

Tutor Training 200 is a one-unit course that is designed for students who intend to be tutors at El Camino College. The course content includes learning theories, tutorial techniques, program procedures, responsibilities, and tutoring practices.

Tutoring Training 200 meets the College Reading Learning Association (CRLA) training program requirements and is designed to help student tutors learn to communicate effectively with students that need academic assistance.

Credit/No Credit only.
1 unit: 4 hours lecture
(6 week course)

* To be considered for employment in the LRC Tutorial Program, students need to have completed courses they wish to tutor with a final grade of B or better. The recommendation of an appropriate instructor is also necessary.
