Procedures For Repeating Tests at El Camino College

PLEASE READ FIRST:  Most tests administered by the El Camino College Assessment/Testing Center may be repeated once without written permission and for a second and final time by petition.  Approval must be obtained from the appropriate Division Dean.  (Petition forms are available from the Assessment/Testing Center.)    However, some tests cannot be repeated at all, such as the Chemistry Placement Test and Contemporary Health Waiver Exam.  Please see information below for specifics regarding the test you would like to repeat.

BASIC GUIDELINES:

In order to improve your scores, refer to the TEST PREPARATION section of this wepage.  (Go back to the Home Page.)

Re-testing for the placement tests (English, Math, ESL) may not occur on the same day for systemic technical reasons.

Placements are based upon highest score received for each individual test.

There is no fee for repeating tests.

All placements are "Recommended".  If you have strong concerns about your final placement results, you should speak with your Counselor or the appropriate Division Dean.

PLACEMENT TESTS:

ENGLISH PLACEMENT:  Reading Comprehension
ENGLISH PLACEMENT:  Sentence Skills

Each of the two parts of the English Placement Test may be repeated once (without written permission) and for a second and final time (by petition), provided that you have not already enrolled into or completed any course(s) in that particular sequence (Reading or Writing).  For example, if you have already enrolled into or completed a Reading course at ECC, you may not repeat the Reading Comprehension Test.  The same is true for Writing courses.  Courses may not be skipped by repeating the test.  Petition forms are available from the Assessment/Testing Center.

MATH PLACEMENT:  Arithmetic
MATH PLACEMENT:  Elementary Algebra
MATH PLACEMENT:  College-Level Math

Each math test may be repeated once (without written permission) and for a second and final time (by petition), provided that you have not already enrolled into or completed any course(s) in the math sequence at El Camino College.  Courses may not be skipped by repeating the test.  Petition forms are available from the Assessment/Testing Center.

(For Math Competency Test, see below under OTHER TESTS.)

ESL PLACEMENT:  Reading Skills
ESL PLACEMENT:  Writing Sample
ESL PLACEMENT:  Oral Interview

One or more parts of the ESL Assessment may be repeated upon the recommendation of the ESL Coordinator.  Courses may not be skipped by repeating the test.  Students should contact the ESL Coordinator directly for permission to re-test.  (Petition not required).

CHEMISTRY:  Chemistry Placement Test

The Chemistry Placement Test may not be repeated.  A student may petition the Dean of Natural Sciences for re-consideration of course placement.  Petition forms are available from the Assessment/Testing Center.  Documentation in the form of previous course work (transcripts) must accompany the submitted petition.

ATB (Ability-To-Benefit) TESTS:

ACCUPLACER

(for native speakers of English):

The ACCUPLACER ATB Test is the same test that is used for English and Math Placement at El Camino College.  However, when taken as an ATB Test, certain tests (Reading Comprehension, Sentence Skills, and Arithmetic) must be administered, completed, and passed on the same day with specified cut-off's.

REPEAT POLICY BEGINNING JULY 1, 2011:  Within any three-month period, you will be permitted an initial test and one re-test.  There is a two-week waiting period between the first and second tests.  If you do not pass after the second test, you must wait three months from the date of the initial test to try again.  In addition, for the third and any subsequest attempts, you will be required to bring in proof of instructional intervention, such as one of the following:  1) a transcript showing completion of a class or classes* to improve your English and/or Math Skills, or 2)  a print-out showing completion of a computerized basic skills program in the Learning Center, or 3) self-review on the above recommended websites.  The proof should indicate to the Assessment/Testing Center Staff that your scores will improve on the next attempt.

*see ATB information sheet for course suggestions (available in Assessment/Testing Center)

CELSA

(for non-native speakers of English):

Please note:  It is required that if an ATB candidate qualifies for, and takes the CELSA (Combined English Language Skills Assessment), he/she must subsequently enroll into ESL courses at El Camino College.  (If this is not the intent of the student, the student must take the ACCUPLACER ATB Test and not the CELSA.)

REPEAT POLICY:  The CELSA may be taken once, and if not passed, may be repeated up to three more times.  After the second attempt, you must wait 3 months before taking the test again.  In addition, for the third and fourth attempts, you will be required to bring in proof of instructional intervention, such as one of the following:  1) a transcript showing completion of a class* to improve your Reading Skills, or 2)  a print-out showing completion of a computerized basic skills program in the Learning Center, or 3) self-review on the above recommended websites.  The proof should indicate to the Assessment/Testing Center Staff that your scores will improve on the next attempt.

Please note:  The U.S. Department of Education has established all guidelines for repeating ATB Tests, not El Camino College.  We are obligated to follow all Federal guidelines exactly as they are stated to us.

OTHER TESTS:

CONTEMPORARY HEALTH:

The Contemporary Health Waiver Exam may be taken only once.  If a student does not pass the exam, a Contemporary Health course must be taken and completed to satisfy the graduation requirement.

MATH COMPETENCY (ACCUPLACER Elementary Algebra or College-Level Math Test, depending upon when student began attending ECC):

The Math Competency Test may be taken up to three times.  At least one week must transpire between the first and second testings, and the second and third testings.  Students are highly encouraged to review subject material before taking or re-taking the exam.  Test topics for the Elementary Algebra Test and the College-Level Math Test may be found on the Testing Web Page or obtained in person from the Assessment/Testing Center.  For the third and final testing, a Petition form must be obtained from the Assessment/Testing Center and taken to the Dean of Mathematical Sciences for signature.  In addition to the Petition, documentation in the form of high school/college transcripts showing the student's academic background in algebra must be attached as part of justification to repeat the test.  Moreover, a student may be asked to describe what they have done in preparation for re-testing.
