FINANCIAL AID ACADEMIC COUNSELING

The Financial Aid Office offers all financial aid applicants academic, personal and general career counseling. Please stop by the office or call 310-660-3493 to make an appointment.  Please bring a copy of transcripts from all other colleges and universities attended and/or foreign transcript evaluations (unofficial copies are acceptable) to your counseling appointment.

Our highly experienced counselors:

1)  have a wealth of experience as former deans and faculty coordinators, as well as experience as counselors at ECC

2)  will help you develop your online educational plan which must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office each year

3)  specialize in knowing the financial aid satisfactory academic progress standards as well as the minimum standards to remain enrolled in good standing at El Camino College.

4)  have expertise in helping you understand how to maintain satisfactory academic progress to continue your financial aid eligibility

5) will help you with understanding why you may have received a letter regarding your academic progress , and

6) will assist you in developing a Lock in List if you have attempted ninety or more (90+) units or have a prior degree AA/AS or higher

Educational Plan: Our financial aid academic counselors help you prepare a roadmap of prerequisite and degree applicable courses to meet your educational objective. Financial aid recipients must have one of the following educational objectives: Transfer,  Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS) or Certificate of Achievement or Accomplishment. We encourage you to also see a counselor in your specific major.

Lock-in-List (LIL): Our financial aid academic counselors prepare Lock in Lists for students that have attempted ninety or more (90+) units OR have a prior degree, AA/AS or higher. Students are paid only for courses listed on this LIL and approved by the Financial Aid Appeals Committee. A written LIL does not guarantee that the Financial Aid Appeals Committee will approve the student for payment.

Once you have been issued a Lock in List:

  • you must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA
  • you must complete 67% of the units in which you enroll each term
  • you may only declare one educational objective (i.e. an associates degree or transfer)
  • you will receive financial aid only for the courses on your lock in list
  • you cannot change you major or the courses on your lock in list
  • you will not receive financial aid for any repeated courses - with exception of a fee waiver
  • you must see the same counselor who completed you lock in list should you have any questions or concerns

El Camino College Minimum Academic Progress Standards: All students must meet the minimum academic standards established according to California Educational Code and El Camino College. See this section in the ECC On line Catalog. To meet the minimum academic standards you must have a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0.

Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards (SAP): In addition to the college's minimum academic progress standards, all financial aid students must meet the minimum satisfactory academic progress (SAP) standards established by the Financial Aid Office. To meet the minimum satisfactory progress standards, you must have completed at least 67% of the cumulative units attempted. These higher standards apply to all financial aid applicants except those receiving only the Board of Governor's Fee Waiver Program.

We look forward to meeting and working with you to achieve your academic goals at El Camino College.
