Federal regulations require that all financial aid students meet minimum academic standards in order to receive financial aid payments. Minimum financial aid academic standards at El Camino College are defined below. Financial aid policies are in effect for all El Camino College students including students that have not applied for financial aid.

Financial Aid Definitions

Attempted Units: Refers to any units for which a grade symbol of A,B,C,D,F,P,R,CR,NC,I,IP,or W is received. Grade symbols of A,B,C,D or CR is considered acceptable for course completion. Grade symbols of F,I,W,IP,NP or NC are not acceptable for course completion.

Educational Plan: Refers to a written plan that lists coursework in a degree program whereby the student must complete a minimum amount of work in order to receive financial aid payments each term. You must turn in an Educational Plan each term. We recommend that you meet with an academic counselor. Academic counselors are experts in matriculation issues and offer good advice for educational planning.

E.S.L. &  Remedial Coursework:  Students may enroll in courses that require assistance with the English language or remedial coursework and still remain eligible for financial aid payments. A remedial program is limited to 30 units of financial aid payments and is not considered a degree program. The student must always be enrolled in a degree program in order to receive financial aid payments.

Repeated Classes:  Refers to Repeated Classes policy which states that the student will not be paid for a repeated class.

Prior Degree: Students with an Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral degree(s) must file a written appeal for the Financial Aid Appeals Committee. Students that are unsure about whether or not they are required to appeal should meet with a financial aid academic counselor.

P.E. Classes: Refers to the maximum P.E. classes that a student can attempt and be paid financial aid. A student may be paid for up to three physical education classes only unless the student's major is Physical Education and the restriction is waived.

Lock-in-List Classes (LIL):  Refers to the remaining courses approved by the Financial Aid Appeals Committee that a student can be paid financial aid. Lock-in-Lists cannot be changed unless the counselor who wrote the LIL made an error, requirements for transfer or graduation have changed or the student has been laid off and can provide documentation to this effect.

Qualitative Standard:  Refers to meeting a minimum grade point average requirement in order to receive financial aid payments.

Quantitative Standard:  Refers to making minimal academic progress to complete your program of study within a maximum time frame.

Program of Study:  Refers to enrolling in a federally approved program of study that meets minimum academic standards.

Maximum Time Frame:  Refers to the maximum amount of time you may be paid federal and state funds.

Minimum Enrollment:  Refers to minimum enrollment standards in order to receive any financial aid payments.

Financial Aid Appeal Process: Refers to an optional process, by the institution, to continue to make financial aid payments to the student. All decisions made by the Appeals Committee are final.
