English 1C
Critical Thinking and Composition
Prerequisite: English 1A with a minimum grade of C
This course focuses on the development of critical thinking skills and on the application of these skills to written argumentation. Students will examine logical reasoning and apply its principles when reading and writing analytic and evaluative essays about argumentative, persuasive, narrative and expressive works and topics.

Creative Writing: Introduction to Creative Nonfiction
After reading and analyzing creative nonfiction writings by important writers, students will write creative nonfiction essays based on their own experiences. Students will learn about the genre and the sub-genres, the elements of creative nonfiction, the writing process, journaling, peer editing, and the workshop model. Students will produce a portfolio of their own writing by semester’s end.
Political Science 2
Introduction to Comparative Politics
In this course students will analyze political systems of different countries in a comparative context. Emphasis will be placed on studying the differences and similarities of governmental systems found in developed democratic nation-states. Developing countries, regional systems, and new democracies will also be analyzed to illustrate the complex nature of creating and maintaining a functioning nation-state system.

Introduction to International Relations
3 units; 3 hours lecture
Recommended Preparation: Political Science 1; eligibility for English 1A

In this course students will examine the factors that determine the relations between nations and the problems that result from the interplay of these factors. The conditions that can lead to both conflict and cooperation among nations will be examined. Major topics include international security, issues of international political economy, and international organizations. International law and diplomacy are examined as alternative means of resolving conflict.

Program Leaders:
Pete Marcoux has been teaching at El Camino College since 1998. He recently led El Camino College’s first service learning based study abroad program to Costa Rica in 2010. He has also led two programs to Spain: in the spring of 2003 and the summer of 2006. His own study abroad experience as an undergraduate at the University of Wollongong is a primary motivation for leading these expeditions.

Dr. Ellen R. Antoine has been a member of the Political Science Department at El Camino College since 1988. She has traveled extensively in Europe and ("all to briefly") in Asia. She is very excited about the prospect of this summer in Japan and looks forward to meeting all of those who will be participate in this adventure!
