Database Description

Full-Text Periodical Title Locator  is a valuable tool to use if you are looking for a specific journal, magazine, or newspaper by title; the Locator will indicate if a title is available in full-text through the ECC Library, whether in print, electronic, or microfilm format.

Academic OneFile (New)  contains full-text articles from more than 6,000 peer-reviewed/scholarly journals and reference sources, focusing on science, technology, medicine, the social sciences, and humanities.

Alt-HealthWatch  focuses on articles from journals and reports on alternative, holistic approaches to health care and wellness. It offers full-text articles from nearly 180 international and often peer-reviewed/scholarly publications. (An EBSCOhost database)

American History and Life with Full Text  is an important database that covers the history and culture of the United States and Canada, from prehistory to the present. Over 1,700 journals are indexed, and full-text coverage offered for more than 230 journals and nearly 100 books.

ARTstor Digital Library (New)  offers more than a million high-resolution images in the arts, architecture, humanities, and sciences from prominent museums, photo archives, scholars, photographers, and artists. Tools are also provided to support use of the images for teaching and research.

Auto Repair Reference Center  is a database that provides information on most major vehicle manufacturers and more than 37,000 domestic and imported vehicles dating back to 1945. The vehicle information includes specifications, maintenance schedules, technical service bulletins, recalls, step-by-step photographs, and wiring diagrams.

BHA and RILA  (Bibliography of the History of Art and Repertoire de la litterature de l'Art) sponsored by the J. Paul Getty Trust, is the world's most comprehensive bibliography of scholarly writing about the history of Western art. As of April 2010, it is available free of charge on the Getty Web site. Note that a database search includes both BHA (covering 1990-2007) and the International Bibliography of Art (IBA), covering the years 2008 and part of 2009.

Book Index with Reviews (BIR)  is a comprehensive database that provides basic information on over 5 million book titles in a wide range of formats, as well as multimedia materials such as DVD and sound recording titles. It also offers over 800,000 full-text searchable reviews of the various titles included.

Books in Print  is useful for determining what books are in print and what titles are scheduled for publication in the next six months. It also has a special children's section and a section for the type of current fiction mentioned in popular reviews. Audio book and video titles are included.

Boom: A Journal of California  is the first scholarly, peer-reviewed journal to explore the state in a comprehensive way--its history, economy, politics, culture and arts. It was launched in March, 2011, and the Library offers it online through the JSTOR platform as well as in print form. Also, issues in print are available at the Periodals Department.

Britannica Online Academic Edition  combines the complete Encyclopaedia Britannica and full-text articles from various periodicals with select Web sites plus a host of reference tools including the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionay and Thesaurus.

Business Source Premier  provides full-text coverage for more than 2,300 journals in all areas of business plus regional business publications, market research reports, industry reports, and company profiles. Full-text coverage dates back to 1965. (An EBSCOhost database)

CINAHL Complete  is the most comprehensive version available of the Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. It offers full-text coverage for more than 1,300 journals, 400 more than any other version of CINAHL.

Consumer Health Complete  is intended to meet patients' information needs regarding health and wellness. This database provides comprehensive content on a variety of health-related topics and includes access to up-to-date guides on drugs.

CountryWatch  presents background information/profiles about individual countries and political and economic news from around the world.

CQ Researcher examines a controversial issue every week, offering background information, pro and con arguments, and references for further study.

Credo Reference (with Topic Power Search)  offers hundreds of full-text online reference books covering major subject areas. Considerable multimedia content is included, such as videos, audio files, and flash animations. Also, it provides a “power search” feature which allows searching across multiple ECC databases for information on particular topics.

Current Biography Illustrated (New)  offers the accurate, up-to-date biographies/obituaries and images of famous people for which the printed monthly magazine, Current Biography, is well-known, but in a much easier-to-use searchable, electronic format. (An EBSCOhost database)

(EBSCOhost) Academic Search Premier  offers over 3700 full-text, peer-reviewed/scholarly journals. Coverage for many key titles dates back to 1975 or earlier.

(EBSCOhost) ERIC (Education Resource Information Center)  provides access to education journals and other resources. It links to more than 100,000 full-text documents.

(EBSCOhost) MasterFILE Premier  provides thousands of general magazine articles, many in full text. Coverage of some key titles dates back to 1975 or earlier. It includes some academic journal, newspaper, and primary source document indexing and abstracting.

Ethnic NewsWatch  features primarily full-text articles from ethnic and minority magazines, journals, and newspapers, dating back to 1990.

Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia  provides over 25,000 encyclopedic entries covering a variety of subjects. Some images are included. (An EBSCOhost database)

Gale Literary Databases  provides access to the online versions of 3 standard print literary reference works. 1) Contemporary Authors offers complete biographical and bibliographical information on more than 120,000 U.S. and international authors. 2) Dictionary of Literary Biography features essays about authors, their lives and works, by recognized literary scholars and critics. 3) Contemporary Literary Criticism Select offers critical analysis of key literary works by major and new authors, selecting and enhancing information from the print title, Contemporary Literary Criticism.

GreenFILE  focuses on government documents, scholarly and general interest articles dealing with the environment. It offers full text for more than 4,000 titles, plus abstracting and indexing information for another 600 titles. (An EBSCOhost database)

Health and Wellness Resource Center  includes the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, the PDR Family Guide for Nutrition and Health, along with articles from hundreds of health/medical journals and pamphlets.

Health Reference Center - Academic  provides full-text articles from a variety of nursing and allied health/medical journals and magazines.

Health Source: Consumer Edition  offers consumer information on many health topics in the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine, and general health fields. It features a searchable full text capability for some magazines, plus abstracts and indexing for other publications. (An EBSCOhost database)

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition  provides over 500 scholarly full-text journals focusing on many medical disciplines, with an emphasis on nursing. Also featured are abstracts and indexing for over 800 journals. (An EBSCOhost database)

Issues and Controversies  features reports on controversial issues. It "combines objective analysis [and] clear explanations of opposing points of view...so students and other users can quickly grasp the essentials of even the most complex topics."

JSTOR Arts and Sciences  archive offers full-text back issues of scholarly journals primarily in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. This database also includes a selection of titles in the more science-oriented fields of ecology, mathematics, and statistics. For most of the journals, there is a time lag between the most current issue published and when the content is available in JSTOR: typically the time lag is 3 to 5 years.

Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts  indexes and abstracts periodicals, books, and research reports on subjects such as librarianship, cataloging, online information retrieval, and information management. Some full-text articles are also provided. Coverage dates back to the mid-1960s. (An EBSCOhost database)

Literature Criticism Online: Poetry Criticism and Short Story Criticism  offers online searchable versions of the standard reference books, Poetry Criticism and Short Story Criticism. Poetry Criticism provides literary analysis and commentary on poets and poems of all eras. Short Story Criticism provides analysis and commentary on major authors of short fiction and their works. The database uses a format that matches the look and feel of the print originals, but the coverage is more up-to-date than the ECC Library's print volumes of these two titles.

Literature Resource Center  is a comprehensive source of literature information, including literary criticism, biographical profiles (U.S. and international authors), book reviews, and author interviews from books, journals, and authoritative literary Web sites.

MEDLINE  provides primarily index and citation information on journal articles and other resources related to medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and more. While essentially based on the tool created by the National Library of Medicine, some links to full-text material have been added. (An EBSCOhost database)

Newspaper Source Plus  offers full-text access to more than 700 national and international newspapers including the Orange County Register, San Jose Mercury News, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, and The Times (London). Full-text television and radio transcripts from CBS News, CNN, National Public Radio, etc. are included. (An EBSCOhost database)

Opposing Viewpoints in Context  offers a wealth of information on contemporary social issues. It includes topic overviews, pro/con viewpoint essays, primary source documents, court-case summaries, periodical articles, statistical tables, podcasts, and images. Updating is on-going.
Note: The El Camino College Library owns some of the Opposing Viewpoints books which offer part of what is in this database.

Professional Development Collection  is a source of articles over 500 full-text education journals, designed especially for educators, librarians, and researchers. This database also contains more than 200 reports. (An EBSCOhost database)

ProQuest National Newspapers Core  provides full-text articles and abstracts from 5 national newspapers, the Los Angeles Times, Wall St. Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, and Christian Science Monitor.

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection  offers articles on psychology, psychiatry, and anthropology from over 500 full-text journals. (An EBSCOhost database)

RCLWeb  is the online edition of the standard reference work, Resources for College Libraries, which lists thousands of print and electronic titles in curriculum-specific subjects that are considered essential for academic libraries. The subjects include those commonly taught at community and technical colleges.

Regional Business News  incorporates coverage of over 70 business journals, newspapers and newswires from various metropolitan and rural areas within the United States. This database is updated on a daily basis.

Religion and Philosophy Collection  covers topics such as moral philosophy, political philosophy, history of philosophy, and world religions in articles from over 300 full-text journals. (An EBSCOhost database)

Salem Literature  is a database that offers online the complete content of the following literary reference works (which are also available in print form in the Library's Reference collection):

  • Critical Surveys of Poetry (American Poets, British, Irish & Commonwealth Poets, European Poets, World Poets, Topical Essays, Cumulative Indexes)
  • Masterplots, Fourth Edition
  • John Steinbeck (Critical Insights: Authors series)
  • The Grapes of Wrath (Critical Insights: Works series)

  • Science  is the online version of the journal, Science, whose articles rank among the world's most cited research. The content includes Science from 1997 to present. This database provides the full text of the journal's news stories, research reports, and commentary articles, enhanced by abstracts from the online Science archive (1889-1996 coverage), science career information, links to companion Web sites, and other additional Web-only features.

    Science Full Text Select (New)  offers complete articles from more than 400 journals on a broad range of science and science-related subjects, including climate change, astronomy, earth science, oceanography, robotics, biotechnology, and information technology. (An EBSCOhost database).

    Social Problems  is the online version of one of the most widely read professional journals in the social sciences. It presents influential sociological findings and theories related to our complex social environment.

    Testing & Education Reference Center with Career Module  offers many test preparation materials, (including standard tests such as the GED, TOEFL, GRE, LSAT, plus civil service, nursing and military exams), career assessment/resume building/interviewing tools, current information on financial aid, and U.S./Canadian colleges and universities.

    Today's Science  offers reports on contemporary scientific topics. It covers not only fields such as biology, chemistry, mathematics, but also psychology, the environment, science and society.

    Vocational Studies Premier  is specifically designed to support vocational research in two-year colleges. It offers full-text articles on a wide-range of fields including computer and data processing, cosmetology, fashion design, graphic arts, health information technology, law enforcement and criminal justice, paralegal studies, veterinary assisting, alcohol and drug abuse counseling, biotechnology, and electrical technology.
