Speaker Ashley Graham to Present “Was That Supposed to be Funny?”

Part of the CFA Resident Artist Series, ECC instructor will explore humor in public speaking

Speaker Ashley Graham will explore the use of humor in public address with her presentation “Was That Supposed to be Funny?” set for 7 p.m. Jan. 23 in the El Camino College Campus Theatre.

Graham, an ECC communication studies instructor and debate team coach, will show how elements of humor can be employed in public speaking to increase likeability and persuasion, harm a debate opponent’s credibility and add to the audience’s entertainment. She will examine what is funny through exploring different types of humor, when to use it, and how to determine when to avoid humor in a given context.

Using excerpts from commencement speeches, mass media examples and current communication research on humor, participants will learn how to determine if/when they should use humor and know how to better gauge the impact of humor in public address.

Tickets for the event range from $10-$15 and may be purchased online at centerforthearts.org using the online ticketing system or by phone at 800-832-ARTS. The Ticket Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Campus parking is $3. The Campus Theatre is located at 16007 Crenshaw Boulevard, Torrance.
