El Camino College Announces Virtual Commencement Ceremony
El Camino College will recognize the Class of 2020 with a virtual commencement ceremony in June. The move to an online format is designed to celebrate student success, while also following protocols for social distancing and the state’s stay-at-home order.
The 73rd Annual El Camino College Commencement Ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, June 12, the time and date previously established for the traditional in-person event before the college transitioned to virtual instruction due to the unusual circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The virtual ceremony will be available via www.elcamino.edu/commencement, offering faculty, staff, students and their family and friends an opportunity to celebrate together online. The decision to move to a virtual format puts a priority on the health and safety of the campus community and was made after much deliberation and collegial consultation by the Commencement Committee.
“We look forward to celebrating the achievements of our graduates through this virtual event that commemorates this important milestone in a meaningful way, bringing us together, as Warriors,” said El Camino College President Dena P. Maloney. “The Class of 2020 is inspiring, and their determination to succeed is absolutely impressive. While navigating new paths in virtual instruction and online learning, they continued with their education among many uncertainties in our ever-changing environment.”
All are welcome to join in and listen to the 2020 student speaker and watch Superintendent/President Maloney and Academic Senate President Darcie McClelland present the Class of 2020 to the El Camino Community College District Board of Trustees.
Student speaker Jenifer Tovar is looking forward to connecting with her classmates through the celebration, and plans to discuss resiliency and meeting challenges, while sending a message of love and unity to the Class of 2020. She hopes her classmates remain steadfast in their pursuit of their dreams and make an impact on the world as Warriors.
“Sometimes life gets the best of us, and it teaches us how to balance school life, personal life, and the things that go in between,” she said. “Being a Warrior is about picking up the armor, dusting yourself off, and living to fight another day. Going to El Camino College was probably the best decision I’ve ever made. After all these years trying to find myself, I’m finally here. And this is just the beginning. COVID-19 may have impacted my time now, but life has bigger and better plans waiting for me.”
Members of the platform party, which includes college administrators, 2020 Distinguished Faculty honoree Jenny Simon and 2020 Distinguished Staff Breeanna Bond, will also be recognized during the commencement ceremony. The video presentation will be followed by a custom slideshow featuring the Class of 2020. Candidates for degrees and/or certificates were invited to submit their name, degree, honors, a personalized message, and a photo in cap and gown, or graduation-appropriate attire.
