El Camino College Concert Jazz Band to Perform
El Camino College’s premier big band will present the compositions of innovative jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk in a show featuring guest artist ECC jazz trumpet faculty member Jamie Hovorka.
The ECC Concert Jazz Band performance “Monk and More: A Tribute to Thelonius Monk” is set for 8 p.m. Nov. 29 in Marsee Auditorium. Monk is considered one of the most creative musicians in jazz history. In celebration of his centennial, El Camino College's flagship jazz big band will feature his music, plus charts by Akiyoshi, Chan, Goodwin, Jones, Sebesky, and more!
ECC faculty member Alan Chan will also present a pre-concert talk at 7:15 p.m., offering insight about Monk's work and influence on the art of jazz. Chan is a critically acclaimed jazz artist who has lived and toured in the United States, Asia and Europe. Orchestras, college and high school bands, and jazz bands, including the Grammy-nominated Brussels Jazz Orchestra, have performed his work. In 2012, Chan founded the Alan Chan Jazz Orchestra, which is comprised of top Los Angeles studio and jazz musicians.
