El Camino College Concert Jazz Band to Present Spring Performance

The El Camino College Concert Jazz Band will explore music from various parts of Latin America at 8 p.m. May 23 in the Campus Theatre.

The college’s flagship jazz ensemble will present a big-band jazz mix of musical work titled “Salsa y Mucho Mas,” directed by Alan Chan and showcasing an array of styles from countries such as Cuba, Brazil and Peru. Special guests include percussionist/vocalist Rayner Fernandez, tenor saxophonist/composer Anibal Seminario and vocal jazz ensemble En Harmony.

ECC faculty member Alan Chan will also present a pre-concert discussion at 7:15 p.m. that will take a closer look at the diverse styles of Latin American music and provide insight into the inspiration behind the music. Chan is a critically acclaimed jazz artist who has lived and toured in the United States, Asia and Europe. Orchestras, college and high school bands, and jazz bands, including the Grammy-nominated Brussels Jazz Orchestra, have performed his work. In 2012, Chan founded the Alan Chan Jazz Orchestra, which is comprised of top Los Angeles studio and jazz musicians.

Tickets for the performance are $10 and may be purchased online at www.centerforthearts.org using the online ticketing system or by phone at 800-832-ARTS.
