El Camino College Music Ensembles to Present Memorable Fall Concerts

A variety of El Camino College music ensembles will present concerts this fall, featuring highlights of student work and seasonal themes.

The El Camino College Symphony Orchestra will perform 8 p.m. Nov. 16 in Marsee Auditorium. Directed by Dane Teter, the program “Music for Children of all Ages” will showcase Roger Quilter’s “A Children’s Overture,” John Williams’ “Flight to Neverland,” Koji Kondo’s “Super Mario Bros.,” and David Lovrien’s “Minor Alterations.” The El Camino College Symphony Orchestra is comprised of musicians and community members who perform traditional and contemporary music. The concert lineup continues with the ECC Concert Jazz Band, directed by David Moyer at 8 p.m. Nov. 20 in Marsee Auditorium. El Camino College’s flagship big band will perform an electrifying concert, featuring repertoire from a variety of stylistic periods, connecting the work of the great masters to contemporary jazz orchestra arrangements. Directed by David Sills, the ECC Studio Jazz Band will perform swing, straight-ahead jazz, and great big band music in a concert set for 8 p.m. Nov 22 in Marsee Auditorium. This dynamic ensemble performs arrangements from the great composers, arrangers and bandleaders from the jazz tradition in the style of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Oliver Nelson, Woody Herman and Gil Evans. El Camino College’s Guitar Ensemble, directed by Jon Minei, will perform at 7 p.m. Dec. 3 in Haag Recital Hall. This group features guitarists who read standard musical notation in addition to basic chords. The performance will include guitar ensemble literature from the Renaissance to the present, including music of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras, as well as jazz and rock styles. The El Camino College Concert Band will present a concert titled “Celebrating Holidays” at 8 p.m. Dec. 7, featuring soprano Erin Woods. Directed by Dane Teter, the performance in Marsee Auditorium will include holiday compositions such as George and Ira Gershwin’s “A Gershwin Tribute to Love,” Danny Elfman’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” and Bill Holcombe’s “Festive Sounds of Hanukah.”  Tickets for the concert are $10 and may be purchased at www.centerforthearts.org using the online ticketing system or by phone at 800-832-ARTS.
