El Camino College to Present “Gender in Media”

El Camino College communication studies faculty members Francesca Bishop and Joseph Evans will discuss the role of “Gender in Media” during a presentation set for 7 p.m. July 10 in Marsee Auditorium.

Today’s media influences the development of many perceptions, attitudes and behaviors exhibited by and expected from women and men. This presentation will explore the role that various forms of media, including advertisements, television, music and film, play in creating these social norms and influencing views on gender roles in our society. 

Professor Bishop is a professor and a nationally recognized debate coach who led El Camino College to national championships in two different organizations in 2014. Her teams have won national championships 12 of the last 15 years. In 2017, she led the ECC debate team to four national championships, making the team the most dominant in the country. Bishop is the southwest regional governor and chair of the Debate Committee for the Phi Rho Pi National Community College Forensic Association and the 2014 recipient of the Pacific Southwest Collegiate Forensics Association Wyman/Howe Award for excellence in coaching and service to the forensics community. She earned a bachelor’s degree from UCLA and a master’s from California State University, Fullerton. 

Evans is a professor of communication studies and the assistant debate coach at El Camino College. An ECC alumnus, he competed for the speech and debate team before transferring to UCLA to continue his debate career. While competing, he won multiple tournaments and awards, including topic speaker in the state of California. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, Evans earned a master’s degree from California State University, Long Beach where he also coached the debate team. As an instructor at El Camino College, Evans emphasizes argumentation and an understanding of current events. ECC’s forensics team is a perennial powerhouse, winning countless competitions nationwide.

The Ticket Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Campus parking is $3. Marsee Auditorium is located at 16007 Crenshaw Boulevard, Torrance.
