LA Opera Visits El Camino College for Youth Event
A performance by the Los Angeles Opera at El Camino College on Jan. 29 drew more than 1,850 South Bay elementary school students to a packed Marsee Auditorium.
The LA Opera’s special performance of “The Marriage of Figueroa” packed the house, breaking records for the largest attendance in the five years El Camino has offered this production. Part of a partnership with El Camino College’s Center for the Arts, the free, fun, and interactive 50-minute program provided a high-energy introduction to the world of opera.
The creative show is geared to a young audience and based on Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro.” The story is set at the beautiful and fictional Mission Aguas Frescas where a wedding celebration is underway for the powerful governor of Upper California, Gen. José Figueroa – a real historical figure. Figueroa receives a surprise wedding gift: a performance of his favorite opera, “The Marriage of Figaro.” His guests ask him to perform the role of Figaro to teach him a lesson about the error of his greedy ways.
Aimed at students in grades two through six, this youth event is part of an LA Opera outreach program designed to teach the basics of opera, music and performance.
The El Camino College Center for the Arts features a spring schedule full of exciting music presentations, theater productions, dance performances, art gallery exhibitions, film screenings and more.
