English as a Second Language (ESL)

The mission of the ESL department is to equip students with adequate listening, speaking, reading, writing, and academic skills to enable them to be successful in everyday and vocational situations and in transfer-level classes.”

The ESL program at El Camino College has been in existence for over 25 years. During that time it has served student from almost 100 different countries. The department has a large faculty which is highly qualified in second language acquisition and linguistics as well as English. Many of the instructors are bilingual and have lived abroad.

The program offers credit and noncredit ESL courses. Credit ESL courses are academic and are intended to prepare students for college courses or help students get their professional certification in any of a wide variety of careers. Click Path to Enrollment - ESL Classes for information on how to enroll in credit ESL classes, including information on applying for admission, assessment tests, and registration.

Although noncredit ESL courses cover academic English, they are more focused on helping student communicate in English at home, work, and in the community. Noncredit courses are free. For more information on noncredit ESL courses, please click Noncredit ESL at El Camino College.
