Procedures For Repeating Tests at El Camino College
PLEASE READ FIRST: Most tests administered by the El Camino College Assessment/Testing Center may be repeated once without written permission. However, for a third and final testing opportunity students must petition and obtain approval from the appropriate division dean. (Petition forms are available from the Assessment/Testing Office located in the Warrior Welcome Center.
Some tests cannot be repeated, such as the Chemistry Placement Test and Contemporary Health Waiver Exam.
Please see information below for specifics regarding the test(s) you would like to repeat.
In order to improve your scores, refer to the TEST PREPARATION link on the left of
Re-testing for the placement tests (ESL or Math Competency) may not occur on the same day for systemic technical reasons.
Placements are based upon highest score received for each individual test.
There is no fee for repeating tests.
All placements are recommended. If you have strong concerns about your final placement results, you should speak with an ECC counselor or the appropriate division dean.
ESL PLACEMENT: Reading Skills
ESL PLACEMENT: Writing Sample
ESL PLACEMENT: Oral Interview
One or more parts of the ESL Assessment may be repeated upon the recommendation of the ESL Coordinator. Courses may not be skipped by repeating the test. Students should contact the ESL Coordinator directly for permission to re-test. (Petition not required).
CHEMISTRY: Chemistry Placement Test
The Chemistry Placement Test may not be repeated. A student may petition the Dean of Natural Sciences for re-consideration of course placement. Petition forms are available in the Assessment/Testing Office. Documentation in the form of previous course work (transcripts) must accompany the submitted petition.
ATB (Ability-To-Benefit) TESTS:
(for native speakers of English):
The ATB Tests (Reading Comprehension, Sentence Skills, and Arithmetic) must be administered,
completed, and passed on the same day with specified cut-off's.
REPEAT POLICY BEGINNING JULY 1, 2011: Within any three-month period, you will be permitted an initial test and one re-test. There is a two-week waiting period between the first and second tests. If you do not pass after the second test, you must wait three months from the date of the initial test to try again. In addition, for the third and any subsequest attempts, you will be required to bring in proof of instructional intervention, such as one of the following: 1) a transcript showing completion of a class or classes* to improve your English and/or math skills, or 2) a print-out showing completion of a computerized basic skills program in the ECC Learning Center, or 3) self-review on the above recommended websites. The proof should indicate to the Assessment/Testing Office staff that your scores will improve on the next attempt.
More ATB information and course suggestions is available in the Assessment/Testing Office.
(for non-native speakers of English):
Please note: It is required that if an ATB candidate qualifies for, and takes the CELSA (Combined English Language Skills Assessment), they must subsequently enroll into ESL courses at El Camino College. (If this is not the intent of the student, the student must take the ACCUPLACER ATB Test and not the CELSA.)
REPEAT POLICY: The CELSA may be taken once, and if not passed, may be repeated up
to three more times. After the second attempt, you must wait 3 months before taking
the test again. In addition, for the third and fourth attempts, you will be required
to bring in proof of instructional intervention, such as one of the following: 1)
a transcript showing completion of a class* to improve your Reading Skills, or 2)
a print-out showing completion of a computerized basic skills program in the Learning
Center, or 3) self-review on the above recommended websites. The proof should indicate
to the Assessment/Testing Center Staff that your scores will improve on the next attempt.
Please note: The U.S. Department of Education has established all guidelines for repeating ATB Tests, not El Camino College. We are obligated to follow all Federal guidelines exactly as they are stated to us.
The Contemporary Health Waiver Exam may be taken only once. If a student does not pass the exam, a Contemporary Health course must be taken and completed to satisfy the graduation requirement.
MATH COMPETENCY (ACCUPLACER Elementary Algebra or College-Level Math Test, depending upon when student
began attending ECC):
The Math Competency Test may be taken up to three times; however, at least one week must lapse between the first and second testings, and the second and third testings. Students are highly encouraged to review subject material before taking or re-taking the exam. Tests topics for the Elementary Algebra Test and the College-Level Math Test may be found on the Testing Web Page or obtained in person from the Assessment/Testing Office. For the third and final testing, a petition form must be obtained from the Assessment/Testing Office and taken to the Dean of Mathematical Sciences for approval and signature. In addition to the petition, documentation in the form of high school/college transcripts showing the student's academic background in algebra must be attached as part of justification to repeat the test. Moreover, a student may be asked to describe what they have done in preparation for re-testing.
