International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD) Festival Performances

The Lula Washington Dance Theatre (LWDT) is proud to present Three Dynamic Nights of Dance, part of the 30th anniversary International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD) Conference and Festival, on January 25, 26, & 27, 2018. These performances are presented in association with El Camino College Center for the Arts in Torrance, CA.

Nightly showcase performances at 7:30 pm in the El Camino College Marsee Auditorium will feature acclaimed youth and professional dance companies from across the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. Each night has a different offering and is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a range of legendary classic Modern dance works and celebrate today’s leading-edge contemporary artists, choreographers and companies. Celebrate Black Dance like never before!

Host company LWDT has been an icon of dance in Los Angeles for 38 years – both for its professional company that tours across the United States and abroad, and for its Youth Dance program.

Thursday, January 25, 2018: Youth dance companies from around the nation present Honoring Our Legacies, a celebration of the life of African Dance legend Baba Chuck Davis, founding artistic director of DanceAfrica. It will be a night of vibrant Modern, Jazz, Contemporary, and Traditional dance by youth ensembles from Cleveland, Ohio; Baltimore, Maryland; Detroit, Michigan; Dallas, Texas; and Los Angeles, California, including LA County High School for the Arts (LACHSA) and Lula Washington’s own high energy youth group.

Friday, January 26, 2018: Features the work of established IABD member companies including The GreeneWorks Project of Cleveland, Atlanta Dance Connection, Collage Dance Collective of Memphis, Lula Washington Dance Theatre, and Elisa Monte Dance of New York City. We will honor Los Angeles native Matthew Rushing of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Saturday, January 27, 2018: Highlights the Founding companies of IABD: PHILADANCO, Lula Washington Dance Theatre, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and Dayton Contemporary Dance Company. Special performances include Donald McKayle’s classic “Rainbow ‘Round My Shoulder,” danced by Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, and a performance by New York based choreographer Kyle Abraham.
