Hobbies: Traveling, particularly international travel; Meredith recently returned from a trip to Turkey. She especially enjoys shopping for handcrafted items at local markets in developing countries.

 

Little Known Fact: This August, Meredith celebrates her 30th wedding anniversary to her husband, Jay Jackson. For their honeymoon they traveled to Peru where they spent one night in a mud hut for $1 on an island in the middle of Lake Titicaca.

 

A member of the Fashion Department faculty, Meredith Strauss Jackson teaches textile classes. She is a trained weaver and has created a wide variety of fabrics, rugs, and other items. Meredith’s handcrafted work has been shown at a variety of festivals and contests that have taken her across the United States, and to Switzerland, Turkey, and other locations. She most recently showed her newest textiles at the 2011 Anaheim Surface Art Association Exhibit.

 

Meredith has an apparel line that includes scarves, skirts, blouses and lightweight jackets. She also exhibits in galleries and museums. Recently, her scarves were purchased by the producers of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, as a Christmas gift for the cast and crew.

 

She also likes her time in the classroom, especially when it comes to teaching a subject she loves. Meredith finds it very satisfying to introduce students to something new and to have them respond to the lesson and become interested in the topic.

 

“I enjoy teaching at El Camino College,” she said. “I like the diversity of the student population, and would like to work on a program in the future that includes a travel abroad course. I like that there is always a sense of inspiration coming from the students.”

 

Meredith took her first weaving class at the Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale, Colorado. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the Kansas City Art Institute and a Master of Fine Arts in textiles from UCLA. She spent her junior year abroad at Handarbetets VÓ“nner, a weaving school in Stockholm.
