The test was modeled on the AMATYC competition and included 20 questions. Students were given 60 minutes to answer the questions. Timothy and Fernando received medals in recognition of their achievement at the "Los Angeles Metro MESA Day" at UCLA. More than 19 MESA community college programs from throughout the state and a total of 183 students participated in this year’s competition.
State Track & Field Championships
Our men’s track & field finished a very respectable eighth place in the state championship. Congratulations to David Cardona, the state 5000m champion! The race concluded a tremendous freshman season for David, who finished the season with the state's best marks in both the 5,000m and 1500m – both ranking nationally as well. More...
Other standout performances include: KayC Wharton, with a solid fourth-place finish in the 400 hurdles; Jose Lezama placed fifth in the 1500 meters; Shalé Garland placed fifth in the 400 meters and returned later with a seventh-place finish in the 200 meters; Jason Harrell placed sixth in the discus, moving him to second on the ECC All-Time Top-10 performer List; Kara Kalmar placed fifth in the pole vault, finishing the year with a new school record of 11-1; Ben Woodruff placed fifth in javelin; Shavette Williams placed 11th in the triple jump. Great job, Warriors!
ECC Baseball – Conference Champs!
Congratulations to our Warrior baseball team, which claimed the South Coast Conference Champions, won the first round of the Southern California Regionals, and clinched the Super Regional! More congratulations go to Warrior pitcher/outfielder, Kyle Petter, who was named 2010 Southern California Player of the Year and Southern California Co-Pitcher of the Year. Both honors will also earn him All-American status. Catcher Aaron Deguire and third baseman Chris Vopinek were also named to the All Southern California team for the Warriors.
A Fashionable Show
Kudos to our students who produced and created “City Nights,” the 28th Annual El Camino College Fashion Show, staged June 4 in Marsee Auditorium. “City Nights” featured the designs of students in the college’s draping, patternmaking, advanced sewing, fitting and alterations, and tailoring classes. Walter Mendez, shown at left with models Sarah Smith and Samantha Glunt wearing the Walter Collection, won Best of Show; first place for his collection; and the BMW “White” category. Second place went to Mari Saito. The show also put the spotlight on student designs from area high schools and younger sewers from the community. http://www.elcamino.edu/academics/indtech/fashion/

Our El Camino College Child Development Center (CDC) has planned a graduation ceremony for the preschool students who are headed off to kindergarten in the fall. The "Crossing the Bridge" event is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. June 18 at the CDC playground. Presentations will be made from students in each classroom and each child leaving the CDC program (headed for kindergarten) will cross a bridge from their teachers to their parents. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony. The CDC is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and serves children ages 2-5. Congratulations to our youngest graduates!

Design Challenge @ ECC
ECC’s Business Training Center and the Industry & Technology Division recently hosted a Design Challenge event sponsored by the Chevron/ Project Lead the Way grant. High school students attended, working in teams to design a product for Chevron. Critical thinking, public speaking/presentations of the design, creativity, and technical ability all came into play through this engaging event. More...
Twelve teams of three students participated, representing the California Academy of Math and Science (CAMS), Hawthorne High School, Lennox Academy of Math and Science, University High School, Redondo Union High School and Warren High School. Each team was presented with a design brief specifying a problem to solve. The solution was to include hand-drawn sketches, a three-dimensional computer model, component drawings, an assembly drawing and an exploded view drawing identifying parts and a material list. The team was also required to prepare a Powerpoint presentation of their design to be judged at the end of the day. ECC Professors Rick Hughes and Victor De La Torre reviewed and scored all of the team documents submitted and also resolved technical issues that occurred. A great day of science!
