Journalism Awards

El Camino College’s student newspaper is a finalist for the top honor in college journalism, the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) Pacemaker Award.

In addition, the Union and its staff are also nominated for top awards in four other prestigious categories, including reporter of the year. Judging for the Pacemaker competition is based on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, opinion-page leadership, in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics, according to ACP.

Jessica Martinez, former Union editor-in-chief, was one of only three student journalists at U.S. two-year colleges named as finalists in the College Media Association reporting category. Martinez, who was selected as an El Camino College Presidential Scholar, is continuing her education at New York University.

Eugene Chang was designated as a finalist for the ACP Cartooning Award. The College Media Association separately placed the Union among its top candidates in Best Editorial Cartooning competition as well.

The Union’s website, eccunion.com, was honored with its selection as a finalist for Best Online Infographic.

The award winners will be announced at the combined Associated Collegiate Press and College Media Association convention from Oct. 28-Nov. 1 in Austin, Texas. The Union, which is run by students enrolled in journalism classes, has been a leader in community college journalism since it began publishing in 1946.
