Safety Matters
Text to 911 Program Launched
Effective Dec. 1, ECC Police Communications Center is now part of the countywide program, "Text to 911." Through this new service, 911 emergency calls can be sent via text messaging from a SMS-enabled cellphone. This service is a welcome addition to the college's overall safety plan and is particularly useful for speech/hearing impaired people. Text to 911 messages while on campus go directly to ECC Police Communications Center and should only be used in emergency situations, same as 911 phone calls. When sending a text message to 911, it is important to give an accurate address or location as quickly as possible. Remember to be clear and concise; do not use emoticons or send pictures as they are currently unsupported. Please note, existing voice-based 911 service is still the most reliable and preferred method of contact, as it is much faster to share information with a 911 operator. In other words, "call if you can, text if you can't." For more information, contact ECC Police at 310-660-3100.
Be Prepared!
With recent events such as wildfires and earthquakes, we are reminded of the importance of being prepared for emergencies. In the event of a disaster, ECC is responsible for checking on all employees and may call upon you for assistance in operational recovery efforts based on your expertise. All employees of the El Camino Community College District are considered "disaster service workers" per California Education Code, Section 3100-3109. In case of an emergency, employees needed by the district will be required to report to the ECC incident commander, or other appropriate emergency response officials, as directed.
In addition, it is vital that Human Resources (HR) has up-to-date and accurate contact information. We would also like to remind everyone to check a few key items and note some important resources:
- Ensure that HR has current personal contact information and emergency contacts.
- Assemble an emergency kit in the event of an evacuation: https://www.ready.gov/build-a-kit.
- Protect your personal property with additional homeowners and/or rental insurance coverage in the event of a natural disaster such as earthquakes and flooding. The California Earthquake Authority provides information: https://www.earthquakeauthority.com/california-earthquake-insurance-policies
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact HR at extension 3807 or via email at [email protected]. Thank you for your efforts to prepare for a safe future.
