ECC Student Magazine Wins Top Awards
El Camino College's Warrior Life magazine has been honored as a general excellence winner and several journalism students were honored individually for their writing, photography and design work. The student-produced magazine, issued in the spring and edited by Alba Erika Mejia, was announced as a winner at the recent Journalism Association of Community Colleges regional conference, a competition with other community college publications in Southern California. ECC journalists were also honored in eight other categories. Jorge Villa received a third-place award for student-designed advertisement and a fourth place for environmental photo portrait. Others receiving fourth-place awards were Sarah Desmond, news story; Karla Henry, video journalism; John Lopez, news photo; Christina Lyon, profile feature story; and Jackie Romano, sports feature photo. Don Perez was awarded an honorable mention for sports story.
The Union, newspaper, which along with Warrior Life magazine is produced by students enrolled in journalism classes, has been a force in college journalism for 72 years. Stefanie Frith is the faculty adviser for the Union and Warrior Life.
