Yamonte Cooper Presents Keynote Address at National Conference

ECC professor, counselor and Career Center Coordinator Yamonte Cooper was the keynote speaker for the 2019 Cross-Cultural Counseling and Education Conference for Research, Action, and Change in Georgia on Feb 8. He presented "The Sunken Place: Racism & Trauma – The Impacts on African-American Men."
An El Camino College faculty member since 2010, Cooper has nearly 20 years of experience working in higher education. He earned a doctorate in educational leadership with a concentration in higher education administration from USC, a master's degree in counseling with a specialization in career counseling and a bachelor's degree in sociology, both from California State University, Northridge. He is also a licensed professional clinical counselor (LPCC) and National Certified Counselor (NCC).
Cooper is a trauma expert, employing multiple modalities and interventions with clients suffering from trauma. He also specializes in working with couples and group therapy. Cooper is an expert on issues of diversity; he has authored and co-authored articles and a book chapter addressing working with various populations. He is the author of the upcoming book "The Impacts of Racism and Trauma on African-American Men" (Routledge). In 2014, Cooper was honored with a prestigious Fulbright International Education Administrators Seminar Award in Germany, where he exchanged best practices in career counseling and development. Last year, he was named a Diversity Initiative award honoree by the National Career Development Association.
