ECC Math Team: Top 10 in Nation
Congrats to the El Camino College math team for recently placing ninth in the nation, among nearly 200 community colleges. The prestigious AMATYC (American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges) Student Math League Contest is the only national math contest devoted solely to community colleges. The contest consists of two rounds, one each semester. The top five scores in each contest were combined to create the team score. Student Jiayi Chen placed first in the fall competition. Seok Jun Park and Hayden Syzdek tied for first place in the spring. For combined points, another tie was posted, with Hayden and Dian Yu scoring equal points.
The subject matter includes pre-calculus, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, general logic and number sense, and the questions are very challenging. The test is one hour and consists of 20 multiple-choice questions. The ECC math team is coached by professor Greg Fry. In addition, faculty members helped run practice sessions, created practice materials, and proctored on contest days: Linda Ho, Zach Marks, Matthew Mata, Ben Mitchell, Jasmine Ng, and Paul Yun.
