As part of the El Camino College Police Department’s ongoing “whole community” approach to enhance campuswide preparedness, the AIMS Team provides monthly forums for faculty and staff to discuss classroom or office issues. Officially titled “Identify, Respond & Connect: How to Manage in the Classroom and in the Office - Distressed and Distressing Students,” this open forum meets from 1-2 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of every month. Upcoming meeting dates are set for March 22 and April. 26. Led by Jan Schaeffer, Ph.D., ECC’s clinical psychologist, the monthly series is designed to lend a helpful and supportive hand to those looking to improve their work (in both a classroom or office setting) when their duties intersect with a student who needs personal help. Participants can ask questions about particular issues, while learning simple strategies to diffuse tension, guide students to support resources, and contribute to each student’s success.
