Onizuka Space Science Day 2016
Students from across the South Bay came to El Camino College’s annual Onizuka Space Science Day earlier this month. The daylong free event drew more than 1,000 serious-minded science students in grades five through 12 who participated in hands-on workshops and explored a variety of scientific topics. The event is dedicated to Ellison Onizuka, a Space Shuttle Challenger astronaut who perished along with the six other crew members during the tragic events of 1986. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Challenger accident. Guest Astronaut Captain Sunita Williams from NASA made a presentation to students before they joined classroom activities and demonstrations led by El Camino College professors, students, and guests from other institutions. Onizuka Space Science Day is sponsored by ECC and American Honda Motor Company.
