Safety Matters
Welcome Back to ECC!
Work continued throughout the summer on a number of campus safety initiatives, including campus police training exercises. Campus emergency radios were also upgraded, and the police department completed its annual 911 desktop phone audit to ensure that all campus phones give the correct location to police dispatch.
DUI Awareness Fair Scheduled with Substance Abuse Prevention Expo
El Camino College will sponsor its 18th Annual South Bay DUI Awareness Fair, featuring displays and interactive demonstrations that convey the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The event is free, open to the public, and runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 31 near the Library Lawn. This year, Student Health Services will sponsor a Substance Abuse Prevention Expo in conjunction with the DUI Awareness Fair. The expo will feature awareness information, valuable resources and prevention activities and coincides with Substance Abuse Prevention Month. The Substance Abuse Prevention Expo is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Library Lawn.
Scheduled just in time for Halloween and the beginning of the holiday season, the DUI Awareness Fair is designed to share information about the dangerous consequences that can come from driving under the influence or getting into a car that is operated by someone under the influence. The El Camino College Police Department, in conjunction with the Avoid the 100 West DUI Task Force, will sponsor this event. The work of El Camino College Police Department officers has been honored by awards from MADD at both the local and state levels. For more information, call the El Camino College Police Department at 310-660-3100.
Save the Date: Great Southern California ShakeOut
Our annual Great Southern California ShakeOut exercise is set for Oct. 18. El Camino College will join millions of other schools, businesses, cities, firefighters, police and individuals to participate in this earthquake drill. At 10:18 a.m. Thursday, October 18, all El Camino College faculty, students and staff will "Drop, Cover, and Hold On," followed by orderly evacuation of buildings to their primary assembly areas. This ShakeOut drill is a great opportunity to practice safety procedures in case of an earthquake. For more information, view www.shakeout.org.
Also, a Campuswide Lockdown – Shelter in Place exercise is planned for the spring semester. By conducting these exercises, we have an opportunity to work together and become better prepared for emergency situations. As always, El Camino College police personnel are available to make safety presentations to any class, club, committee, or office. Please contact the El Camino College Police Department at 310-660-3100 for more information or to request a classroom visit.

Safety Reminders
As the new academic year begins, everyone is reminded to be safe on campus! Here are a few safety reminders:
For your safety:
- • If you see something, say something. By working together, we all contribute to the safety of our college campus.
- • In an emergency, contact Campus Police by calling 911 from a landline phone; 310-660-3100 from a cell phone; or use a campus "Code Blue" emergency phone.
- • Have keys in hand before walking to your car.
- • Always be aware of your surroundings – remember the use of listening devices and cell phones may significantly distract you.
- • Don't walk alone; use the buddy system.
- • Use cautious judgment: meet new people, including classmates or colleagues, in public places; do not get into a car or go to out-of-the-way places with someone you do not know.
- • Learn the location of "Code Blue" POLICE phones located throughout campus. These phones are directly linked to the college Police Department and are considered 911 priority lines. Students and staff are encouraged to utilize these phones for any emergency.
- • Use ECC Courtesy Shuttle operated by ECC Police from 5:30 - 10:30 p.m.; on-call 24 hours. Use one of the POLICE phones located throughout campus or call campus police 310-660-3100 for this service.
- • Night students and faculty are encouraged to park in the same general area as other faculty or students with night classes in their building; this provides the opportunity for a group of students and faculty to walk together to their cars after dark.
- • Immediately report any suspicious activity to campus police.
- • Be alert! Be prepared!
ECC Firewall Installation
A new next-generation Cisco firepower firewall was recently installed, adding increased protection and a remarkable improvement in bandwidth to campus internet and Wi-Fi capabilities. Featuring data center-grade hardware, the new system is robust and designed to serve ECC's needs well into the future, as the next-gen firewall is easily upgradable.
