ECC Joins NBCU Academy Journalism Training Program

El Camino students will be the only community college students in California to be a part of the new NBCU Academy, an innovative multiplatform journalism training and development program. ECC joins 16 other colleges and universities nationwide in this program that will further enhance El Camino's outstanding journalism program, which includes the award-winning student-produced publications, The Union newspaper and Warrior Life magazine.

The new initiative, launched by NBCUniversal News Group, includes a curated on-site curriculum for hands-on learning experience with NBCU News Group journalists, funding for accredited journalism programs, and scholarships. NBCU Academy will invest a total of $6.5 million to the initiative, including scholarships worth $3.5 million over the next two years. In addition to providing equipment and collaborating with professors to develop seminar courses, NBCU News Group journalists, executives, and management from editorial and production teams across NBC News, MSNBC, CNBC, and Telemundo will participate as guest lecturers to provide real-world insight and mentorship.

As part of Comcast and NBCU News Group's corporate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the multiyear partnership involves Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions and colleges with significant Latino, Asian American and Pacific Islander, Black, Indigenous and tribal populations – reaching students from underrepresented groups including those from diverse racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, economic, and geographic backgrounds. El Camino College is one of two California institutions of higher education in the program; CSU Fullerton is also participating.
