Black History Month: Welcome to Montford Point Marines
El Camino College will celebrate Black History Month with a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 25 in the East Dining Room honoring the history and World War II legacy of the Montford Point Marines, the first African Americans to integrate the U.S. Marine Corps. Members of the Los Angeles Chapter of Montford Point Marines will share their stories at this event.
The Montford Point Marines are the first African Americans to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps after President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an executive order establishing the Fair Employment Practices Commission in June 1941. The recruits trained at Camp Montford Point in Jacksonville, North Carolina from Aug. 26, 1942 until the camp was decommissioned on Sept. 9, 1949.
