With heavy hearts, we share the news that Dr. Sam Schauerman, former superintendent/president of El Camino College, passed away Jan. 18 at the age of 90. President Schauerman's career at El Camino College spanned 30 years. He taught math in his native Colorado before coming to El Camino as an administrative assistant in 1965. He would eventually go on to serve as dean of physical sciences and vice president of instruction before being appointed as superintendent/president in 1987. During his eight-year administration, Dr. Schauerman focused on improving services for minority students and strengthening relationships with local industry. At the conclusion of an extensive renovation and expansion project in 1994, the El Camino College library was renamed in his honor, as a tribute to his enduring impact on the college.
The El Camino community also sends its deepest sympathy to family and friends of Harry Stockwell, a professor in El Camino College's Automotive Technology Department who passed away on Jan. 20. Professor Stockwell started teaching full time in the automotive technology program in 1990. His specialty was automotive engine rebuilding and repair. He loved teaching and cared greatly about the success of his students. Harry is survived by his wife and children.
