Memorial Day Remembrance

Memorial Day RemembranceThe El Camino College Veterans Club invites everyone to attend a Memorial Day Remembrance at 1 p.m. May 21 on the Library Lawn Outdoor Stage to honor those who have died serving in the U.S. armed forces. A color guard, flag folding ceremony by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2967, and guest speakers will be part of the event. Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service to our country. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of veterans. In 1968, a Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Monday of May.
