Safety Matters

Get Ready to ShakeOut

The Great California ShakeOut is coming to El Camino College on Oct. 19. Students and employees will learn how to be earthquake safe, joining millions of other schools, businesses, cities, firefighters, police and others who will participate in the event. At 10:19 a.m., all El Camino College students, faculty and staff will "Drop, Cover, and Hold On," and then begin an orderly evacuation of buildings.

Instructions for Staff At 10:19 a.m., you will hear alert sounds from police vehicles throughout campus and receive information on your telephone. This sound simulates the beginning of a major earthquake. Please follow these instructions:

  1. STAY CALM AND DUCK, COVER, AND HOLD ON UNTIL FUTHER NOTICE. Take refuge under a sturdy object.
  2. After approximately one minute, the earthquake simulation will end and you should SHELTER IN PLACE until you receive further notice.
  3. When given notice or when the fire alarms are activated, you will begin to EVACUATE in an orderly manner to the building's designated assembly area.
  4. As you begin to evacuate, take direction to your assembly area from your building emergency responders.
  5. Stay in your assembly area until given notice by the Building Captain to return to the building. END OF DRILL

Thank you for your participation in this important exercise. By participating, you will help us prepare for earthquakes. Visit www.shakeout.org for more earthquake safety information.

DUI Awareness Fair

El Camino College will sponsor its 17th Annual South Bay DUI Awareness Fair, featuring displays and interactive demonstrations that convey the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The event is free, open to the public, and runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 25 near the Library Lawn. Scheduled just in time for Halloween and the beginning of the holiday season, the DUI Awareness Fair is designed to increase community awareness about the dangerous consequences that can come from driving under the influence or getting into a car that is operated by someone under the influence. The El Camino College Police Department, in conjunction with the Avoid the 100 West DUI Task Force, will sponsor this event. The work of El Camino College Police Department officers has been honored by awards from MADD at both the local and state levels. For more information, call the El Camino College Police Department at 310-660-3100.

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month! This is a great time to remember and utilize techniques to ensure protection from online risks. Be sure to "think before you click" on email that could pose a potential security threat. Please send suspicious spam/phishing emails to [email protected]. Everyone in the college community can contribute to a safe online environment. Our best defense is to be prepared! Additional information is available on the ITS Cybersecurity webpage and in monthly cybersecurity newsletters.

Take Heart! CPR/AED Training Available

A CPR/AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) training session is scheduled for Oct. 26 in the Alondra Room for first-time attendees, as well as anyone who needs recertification.

AED devices are strategically placed throughout campus and are ready to help save lives. Please note: employees who are assigned the responsibility of performing daily checks on an AED unit should register and attend this very important class. According to both the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross, only those certified should check and use AED equipment. Sudden cardiac arrest claims the lives of nearly 450,000 Americans each year. Immediate defibrillation and medical attention is key in these patients' survival rate. Thank you to everyone who attends these valuable life-saving CPR/AED training courses.

The registration deadline is Oct. 16. To register, view:
