Smoke/Tobacco-Free Campus Grant Awarded

New efforts are underway to increase compliance with the college's no-smoking policy. Student Health Services will have additional resources to present intervention activities and create new campus informational signs via a new grant from the California Youth Advocacy Network. In addition, a Substance Abuse Prevention Expo is planned for Oct. 31, in conjunction with the annual DUI Awareness Fair. The entire college community is invited to attend this event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Library Lawn. The expo will feature awareness information, valuable resources and prevention activities, and coincides with Substance Abuse Prevention Month. The $5,000 grant is part of the California Youth Advocacy Network's 2018-19 Smoke/Tobacco-Free Policy Compliance Program.

Smoke-Free Campus Policy: The El Camino Community District Board of Trustees approved a policy in February 2015 that prohibits the use of tobacco or nicotine on campus. Board Policy 3570 applies to all students, employees and visitors in all El Camino College facilities and vehicles. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products and the use of nicotine products such as "e-cigarettes" are prohibited in buildings and all outdoor spaces, including parking lots. Sale and advertising of tobacco products are also prohibited in college-owned and occupied buildings, in college publications and on the website.

By creating a smoke-free campus, El Camino College is committed to providing a healthy, comfortable and productive environment, free from the effects of second-hand smoke.
