An energetic group of student leaders attended a conference in Chicago earlier this month, representing El Camino College and the Student Leadership Institute (SLI). Twenty-three SLI students were selected to attend the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) annual conference in Chicago from Oct 5-7. HACU is an international organization with over 470 colleges and universities from the U.S., Latin America and Spain that are committed to the higher education and success of Latino/Hispanic students. ECC students joined more than 500 students from across the country to participate in the HACU ¡Adelante! Leadership Institute, a three-day networking symposium designed to build the career and leadership skills of undergraduate students. Participants attended presentations, workshops, luncheons, and a town hall meeting, and also met with conference exhibitors and recruiters. Internships, research, and advanced education opportunities were also discussed.
Part of ECC Student Equity and Achievement and under the direct supervision of program director Nayeli Oliva, SLI is now in its third year, offering training that builds and enhances student leadership skills. SLI students have shown a consistent involvement on campus and willingness to develop leadership skills. During the institute, students learn about leadership concepts, refine their resume, learn the importance of dressing for success, improve their networking skills, and polish their dining etiquette. Students also have access to workshops and conferences. So far, nearly 150 students have participated in SLI.
