Text to 911 Program to Launch
Beginning Dec. 1, ECC Police Communications Center will be part of the countywide program, "Text to 911." Through this new service, 911 emergency calls can be sent via text messaging from a SMS-enabled cellphone. This service is a welcome addition to the college's overall safety plan and is particularly useful for speech/hearing impaired people. Text to 911 messages while on campus go directly to ECC Police Communications Center and should only be used in emergency situations, same as 911 phone calls. When sending a text message to 911, it is important to give an accurate address or location as quickly as possible. Remember to be clear and concise; do not use emoticons or send pictures as they are currently unsupported. Please note, existing voice-based 911 service is still the most reliable and preferred method of contact, as it is much faster to share information with a 911 operator. In other words, "call if you can, text if you can't." For more information, contact ECC Police at 310-660-3100.
