The college’s first ever “Sink or Sail” boat race competition was a tremendous success with students, faculty and staff packing the pool area to watch engineering – and creativity – come to life. This student-led event featured an action-packed cardboard boat race showcasing homemade watercraft. Student teams managed the entire project, including the design, construction, and decoration of the boats and oars. Professors were assigned to a boat and attempted to paddle across the pool, seeking victory and bragging rights. Planned by ECC’s Society of Women Engineers, organizers wanted to offer additional (and fun) learning opportunities outside the classroom. Congrats to first place boat race winner “Ohm Schooled,” created by Jacob Chun, Samuel Luk, Joshua Sandkulla, and Alexander Kano, piloted by professor John Coroneus. An award for best design was also given to the “Nauty Buoys” team of Abigail Bribiesca Cruz, Jonathan Moreno, Dylan Molina, Andrew Herrera, and Tristan Avelar-Bruce, piloted by professor Benjamin Mitchell.
