Adjunct Counselor at ECC and LACC
During my first month as a Success Coach, I had the opportunity to connect with a Veteran student who was dealing with many difficulties. Our 30 minute check-in turned into an hour of life conversations, where I compassionately listened to him and shared resources I found valuable. Later that week I was surprised by an email from the student - where he included my supervisor, some directors and the VP of Student Services - in which he thanked us for the work that we do. I was humbled to later receive a Warrior PRIDE Award, as I had been nominated by the Veteran Services Director, and was recognized publicly in the Presidents’ Newsletter. The words of gratitude extended to me reminded me of the meaningful impact I could have on students as a Success Coach and it was a role that I was honored to do.

"A memory that has stuck with me is one of an interaction that I had with a returning student. It had been quite a few years since they last attended college, and they were debating whether they actually wanted to re-enroll. I connected with them, shared information, answered their questions, and ultimately, they decided to re-enroll. Seeing how excited the student was to be attending college again felt so rewarding and more so because I was part of this moment in the student's life."

"View this as an opportunity to grow and learn. Take a step back and remember that this is all just a stepping stone that will help you reach your long-term goal to become a community college counselor, advisor, or any work in higher education. Never be afraid to ask questions and it is okay to make mistakes. It is all part of the learning and growing process. Also, don't just treat this role as a job that will pay your bills. If you want to work in community college counseling, this is a perfect time to network and collaborate with other counselors on projects, events, or activities. Ask if you can shadow them during appts or team-up with them on different assignments. Because guess what? These are individuals who will remember you and hopefully serve as references for when you apply for the counseling jobs".

"Not only did the success coach program provide me with an opportunity to work within a community college while completing my grad program, but it allowed me to begin building a fundamental knowledge base that has been so critical in my new role as an Assistant. The experiences and opportunities that I had while in the program better prepared me and made my transition into my new role smoother. I am thankful for the ECC and the success coach program!"
