A day of science exploration is planned for El Camino College's Onizuka Space Science Day 2018, scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 10. ECC welcomes NASA astronaut Robert Shane Kimbrough as the guest speaker at this free hands-on conference for students in fifth through 12th grade. The El Camino College Ellison S. Onizuka Memorial Committee, El Camino College and American Honda Motor Co., Inc. are event sponsors.
Astronaut Kimbrough is a veteran of two spaceflights, the first was a Space Shuttle flight and the second was a six-month mission to the International Space Station. He has completed a total of six spacewalks and has logged a total of 189 days in space. Kimbrough received a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering from the United States Military Academy, West Point in 1989 and a Master of Science in operations research from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1998.
After Kimbrough's presentation, students will participate in hands-on science activities and experiments, egg drop and paper plane competitions, as well as classroom presentations and demonstrations led by El Camino College professors, students and guests from other institutions, such as the Space and Missile Systems Center at LA Air Force Base, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Lunch is free for the first 900 students.
This year marks the 32nd anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger accident in which astronaut Ellison Onizuka perished along with the six other crew members. The annual event at El Camino College was created to honor Onizuka's memory and his dream of inspiring youth to strive for and achieve their career goals.
