Cyber Safety: New Spam/Phishing Mitigation Guide
The El Camino College ITS Cybersecurity Office recently released the new Phishing and Spam User Mitigation Guide. This document offers important information regarding the safe handling of spam and phishing emails, which can damage and/or impair the college's computer network. Dealing with each type of email is important because of the amount of resources required to mitigate phishing emails, which is the more serious of the two threats. The main goal of phishing emails is to entice readers to either click on an embedded link within the email (which will result in malware being loaded onto a computer) or to entice the reader to give personally identifiable information (PII), usually by asking the user to fill out an online form. Spam is designed to entice the reader to buy products and services via unsolicited marketing emails.
If you receive a phishing email, please report it immediately via the "Phish Alert" button in Outlook. Emails that are clearly spam marketing attempts should be reported by clicking the "Mark as Spam" button in Outlook. For detailed instructions, view the Phishing and Spam User Mitigation Guide.
In addition, ITS recently implemented a change in how external emails are identified in ECC email inboxes. All email traffic coming from outside the elcamino.edu domain is now identified and tagged as [EXTERNAL]. This will help identify spoofed phishing emails that look like they are coming from an ECC employee but are actually originating from an external mail server. We appreciate everyone's efforts in keeping our campus safe from cyber threats!
