First-Gen Initiative Conference

Building on the many collegewide efforts to support student success, ECC's inaugural First-Gen Initiative Conference is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27. Coordinated by the El Camino College First Year Experience Program and in partnership with many other student service areas, the conference offers an opportunity to learn about issues specific to students who are the first in their family to attend college. An array of topics, from "Hidden Curriculum" to "Academic Imposter Syndrome," will be discussed. The event features first-gen student speakers, as well as prominent researchers, who will add to the discussion and exploration of the challenges and strengths unique to these students and how best to serve them. Keynote speaker is Danny Solórzano, director of UC/ACCORD and a professor of social science and comparative education in the graduate school of education and information studies at UCLA.
