A pregame celebration officially named the field in Murdock Stadium "Featherstone Field," in honor of Coach John Featherstone and his contributions to El Camino College students and student-athletes. This milestone in Warrior football history took place before the homecoming football game Nov. 16 where players from the teams of the '70s and '80s were also recognized, including the 1987 team that won the national championship under "Coach Feather." A community college football icon, Coach Featherstone retired in 2015 after 31 seasons with the highest winning percentage among active coaches who had coached for at least 15 years in the Southern Section of California. Coach Featherstone is a two-time member of the El Camino College Athletic Hall of Fame, recognized for his accomplishments as a student-athlete when he played football for the Warriors in the late '60s, and as a coach who began his tenure with the Warriors in 1985. Coach Featherstone's passion for El Camino College goes beyond the football field – he always encouraged his players to strive for excellence athletically and to pursue higher education. Coach Featherstone is a true Warrior in every sense of the word.
To further honor Featherstone's accomplishments on and off the field, the new John Featherstone Fund for Athletic Excellence has been established through the Foundation for those who wish to make a donation in recognition of ECC's beloved coach. This fundraising campaign will support athletic teams at El Camino College, in order to provide the best equipment, facilities and uniforms for Warrior athletes.
