Trustees Plan Annual Reorganization Meeting

At its annual reorganization meeting on Dec. 17, the El Camino Community College District Board of Trustees will administer the oath of office at 4 p.m. in the Alondra Room to a new member. Nilo Michelin was recently elected the new trustee representing Area 2, which includes Hawthorne, Del Aire, and Lennox. He assumes the seat previously held by Board President John Vargas, who did not seek reelection. Michelin is an educator who also has experience as an elected official in Hawthorne. He previously served El Camino College as a member of Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee from 2011-2014 and as a member of the Boundary Review Committee when the Board of Trustees changed from at-large to by-trustee area elections in 2012.

Trustee Cliff Numark, who represents Torrance and Redondo Beach in Area 5, was unopposed in his reelection to the Board of Trustees and will also be administered the oath of office for another four-year term at December's reorganization meeting. Trustee Numark has served the district for six years and currently serves as vice president of the Board of Trustees. He previously served as an elected official in Torrance. Trustee Numark is a senior vice president with American Red Cross Biomedical Services.

Trustee Vargas will be honored at 5 p.m. during the board meeting. He served as a representative for Trustee Area 2 from 2013 to 2018. As a board member, Trustee Vargas provided leadership and guidance to the district in creating effective policies to support student achievement, strong fiscal management, and institutional effectiveness. During his tenure, the district initiated/completed several major capital construction projects, the number of students earning degrees and certificates increased, and transformational changes designed for student success were implemented. He served as the 2017 vice president of the board and as board president in 2018. He also served as the board liaison to the El Camino College Foundation.

All regular session board meetings are open to the public. Board agendas and minutes are posted online at http://www.elcamino.edu/administration/board/.
